Un retrato del llamado Período Especial en Cuba, a través de las peripecias de una familia para sobrevivir. Alberto, su esposa Miriam, la pequeña Elizabeth, hija de la pareja y un cerdo que crece y alimentan en la bañadera de la casa, diseñan la marcha de una narración lineal, sin sobresaltos, aunque sí angustiosa, en la que prima el diálogo crudo, el desamparo y el desánimo, por sobre las descripciones.

La atmósfera del libro es delirante, la narración atrapa al lector que busca saber el desenlace, que como la lógica indica, debe ser el sacrificio del marrano. El autor recrea muy bien cómo el impacto de las necesidades materiales hace mella en las relaciones de familia. En otros episodios, Alberto, que es profesor, es asediado por un estudiante, que se resiente del fracaso del socialismo. Sin embargo llama la atención que los personajes que conducen la narración no se preguntan por qué tienen que vivir de esa manera. No hay culpables, no hay reclamos, apenas asumen lo que les ha tocado confrontar y sólo aspiran a que mañana no sea como hoy.

De Mañana es Navidad: "Hacía tiempo que venía haciendo cosas en contra de su voluntad. En contra de su voluntad iba en bicicleta a la escuela. En contra de su voluntad pagaba cincuenta centavos por aquel almuerzo escolar de arroz con cuatro granos de frijoles nadando en un agua casi transparente. En contra de su voluntad estaba criando un puerco en el baño de su apartamento, cuya peste se cogía todas las habitaciones. Le parecía encontrar la peste a puerco en todas partes, y solía olerse las manos y los brazos. El pueblo entero estaba lleno de puercos y olía a cochiquera, a sancocho, a comida fermentada y a desperdicios... Aunque él se estaba quejando demasiado. ¿Todo el mundo no estaba en la misma situación? ¿No se había hecho un llamado a resistir?"


About the Author: Sindo Pacheco (Cabaiguán, Cuba, 1956) Premio El Caimán Barbudo (1990). Ha publicado Oficio de Hormigas (cuentos, 1990) Premio Abril; y las novelas Esos Muchachos y María Virginia está de Vacaciones. Esta última recibió el premio latinoamericano Casa de las Américas, el premio anual La Rosa Blanca que concede la Unión de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba, y el Premio de la Crítica a las mejores obras publicadas en Cuba durante 1994. En 1995 recibió el premio Bustar Viejo, de Madrid, España, por su cuento Legalidad Post Mortem. Cuentos suyos han aparecido en las antologías Cuentos de la Remota Novedad, Los muchachos se divierten, Diana, Fábulas de ángeles, Antología del cuento espirituano, Punto de partida, y en diferentes revistas como Bohemia, El Caimán Barbudo, Letras Cubanas, Casa de las Américas, entre otras. Textos suyos han sido publicados en México, Rusia, Venezuela, Argentina y España. En 1998 la Editorial Norma, de Colombia, publicó su novela juvenil María Virginia, mi amor (finalista del Premio Norma-Fundalectura); y en el 2001, su novela Las raíces del tamarindo fue finalista del Premio EDEBÉ, y publicada por dicha editorial en Barcelona. En el 2003 la Editorial Plaza Mayor, de Puerto Rico reeditó María Virginia está de vacaciones. En el 2009 salió Mañana es Navidadpor la editorial Iduna, de Miami, y María Virginia mi amor por Gente Nueva, La Habana. Actualmente reside en Miami, Estados Unidos.
