"Max und Moritz - Eine Bubengeschichte in sieben Streichen" ist ein Werk von Wilhelm Busch. Das Werk wurde am 4. April 1865 erstveröffentlicht und zählt damit zum Frühwerk von Wilhelm Busch. Es weist jedoch im Handlungsgefüge auffällige Gesetzmäßigkeiten und Grundmuster inhaltlicher, stilistischer und wirkungsästhetischer Art auf, die sich auch in den späteren Bildergeschichten von Wilhelm Busch wiederholen. Viele Reime dieser Bildergeschichte wie "Aber wehe, wehe, wehe! / Wenn ich auf das Ende sehe!," "Dieses war der erste Streich, doch der zweite folgt sogleich" und "Gott sei Dank! Nun ist's vorbei / Mit der Übeltäterei!" sind zu geflügelten Worten im deutschen Sprachgebrauch geworden.
About the Author: Heinrich Christian Wilhelm Busch (* 15. April 1832 in Wiedensahl; + 9. Januar 1908 in Mechtshausen) war einer der einflussreichsten humoristischen Dichter und Zeichner Deutschlands. Seine erste Bildergeschichte erschien 1859. Schon in den 1870er Jahren zählte er zu den bekannten Persönlichkeiten Deutschlands. Zu seinem Todeszeitpunkt galt er als ein "Klassiker des deutschen Humors," der mit seinen satirischen Bildergeschichten eine große Volkstümlichkeit erreichte. Er gilt heute als einer der Pioniere des Comics. Zu seinen bekanntesten Werken zählen die Bildergeschichten "Max und Moritz," "Die fromme Helene," "Plisch und Plum," "Hans Huckebein, der Unglücksrabe" und die "Knopp-Trilogie." Viele seiner Zweizeiler wie "Vater werden ist nicht schwer, Vater sein dagegen sehr" oder "Dieses war der erste Streich, doch der zweite folgt sogleich" sind zu festen Redewendungen geworden. Seine Satiren verspotten häufig Eigenschaften einzelner Typen oder Gesellschaftsgruppen. So greift er in seinen Bildergeschichten die Selbstzufriedenheit und zweifelhafte Moralauffassung des Spießbürgers und die Frömmelei bürgerlicher und geistlicher Personen an. Busch war ein ernster und verschlossener Mensch, der viele Jahre seines Lebens zurückgezogen in der Provinz lebte. Seinen Bildergeschichten, die er als "Schosen" (frz. chose = Sache, Ding, quelque chose = etwas, irgendwas) bezeichnete, maß er wenig Wert bei. Sie waren am Beginn für ihn nur ein Broterwerb, mit denen er nach einem nicht beendeten Kunststudium und jahrelanger finanzieller Abhängigkeit von den Eltern seine drückende wirtschaftliche Situation aufbessern konnte. Sein Versuch, sich als ernsthafter Maler zu etablieren, scheiterte an seinen eigenen Maßstäben. Die meisten seiner Bilder hat Wilhelm Busch vernichtet, die erhaltenen wirken häufig wie Improvisationen oder flüchtige Farbnotizen und lassen sich nur schwer einer malerischen Richtung zuordnen. Seine von Heinrich Heine beeinflusste lyrische Dichtung und seine Prosatexte stießen beim Publikum, das mit dem Namen Wilhelm Busch Bildergeschichten verband, auf Unverständnis. Die Enttäuschung seiner künstlerischen Hoffnungen und das Ablegen überhöhter Erwartungen an das eigene Leben sind Motive, die sich sowohl in seinen Bildergeschichten als auch in seinem literarischen Werk wiederfinden.
