About the Author

Max Heindel etait issu de la petite noblesse danoise. Son pere Francois L. Von Grasshoff etait dorigine allemande et sa mere etait danoise. Max Heindel etait laine de trois enfants. A lage de 16 ans, il entra a lecole de marine de Glasgow, ou il fit des etudes dingenieur. Entre 1895 et 1901, il vecut a New York comme ingenieur consultant. En 1903, il setablit a Los Angeles, ou il devint membre de la Societe Theosophique, dont il fut vice-president en 1904 et 1905. Apres une grave crise cardiaque en 1905, il fut pendant des mois aux portes de la mort.

Bien quil fut grand admirateur de Madame Blavatsky, lenseignement theosophique ne le satisfaisait pas entierement en raison de ses references trop orientales et trop peu chretiennes. Ayant entendu dire quun maitre spirituel enseignait sur le vieux continent, Max Heindel se rendit en Allemagne et y sejourna du debut novembre 1907 a fin mars 1908. Il frequenta les milieux theosophiques allemands, notamment a Berlin. Il suivit de nombreux cycles de conferences et eut egalement quelques six entretiens prives avec Rudolf Steiner, alors secretaire general de la section allemande de la Societe theosophique.

Avant de repartir pour la Californie, Max Heindel dit a Rudolf Steiner quil avait commence a ecrire un ouvrage doccultisme, sorte dabrege des enseignements de lOrient et de lOccident. Des son retour aux Etats-Unis, Max Heindel fonda son premier centre rosicrucien, le 14 novembre 1908, et publia la Cosmogonie des Rose-Croix en 1909. Il entreprit alors des tournees de conferences qui eurent beaucoup de succes, ce qui le conduisit a envisager la creation dun vrai centre de diffusion de sa philosophie rosicrucienne, lequel fut construit a Oceanside. En aout 1910, il epousa une theosophe, Augusta Foss, qui lui enseigna lastrologie, dont elle etait tres ferue. Ils vecurent dabord pendant huit mois a Ocean-Park, pres de Los Angeles, et setablirent ensuite a Oceanside, en Californie. En 1910, Max Heindel faillit de nouveau mourir dune grave crise cardiaque et fut hospitalise, mais a peine retabli, il reprit la diffusion des enseignements rosicruciens. Il organisa des cours par correspondance, entierement gratuits, qui comportaient des cours de Bible, des cours de philosophie rosicrucienne et des cours dastrologie. Le 6 janvier 1919, une ultime crise cardiaque eut raison de lui. Sa veuve Augusta Foss-Heindel continua a diffuser lenseignement.
