Volume 2:

Mauprat est un roman historique publié en 1837. L'histoire se déroule pour la majeure partie dans le Berry à l'aube de la Révolution française au XVIIIe siècle. Il relate l'histoire d'un jeune garçon issu d'une famille de seigneurs cruels, les Mauprat, qui échappe peu à peu à son lourd héritage familial grâce à l'amour qu'il éprouve pour sa cousine, nettement plus civilisée que lui. L'oeuvre recèle plusieurs aspects: si Mauprat est avant tout un roman d'amour et une histoire de famille, c'est aussi un roman d'éducation, une fable philosophique et un manifeste féminin.

La Mare au Diable est un roman court qui décrit une intrigue amoureuse dans la société paysanne du Berry, dont il donne délibérément une vision en partie idéalisée, quoiqu'il comprenne aussi une description précise de certains de ses aspects, comme le mariage paysan qui forme le sujet de son Appendice. La Mare au diable a remporté un succès immédiat à sa parution et est resté l'un des romans les plus connus de l'auteure. Le roman a fait l'objet de plusieurs adaptations au théâtre, au cinéma et à la télévision.La fiction proprement dite est encadrée par une Notice où l'auteur explique ses motivations à écrire La Mare au Diable et d'un Appendice où l'évocation du mariage de Germain est en fait le prétexte pour consigner les traditions du Berry. Dans les éditions actuelles La Mare au diable se compose de trois parties.

Le Dernier Amour, est dédié à l'ami de l'auteur, Gustave Faubert.
À l'occasion d'une discussion, un soir, à la campagne, sur la façon dont il convient de punir l'adultère féminin, Sylvestre formule une curieuse théorie: il faut punir l'infidélité par... l'amitié. Théorie que cet homme misérable de 75 ans compte illustrer par le récit par le récit d'un épisode de sa vie passée...C'était autour de l'année 1843. Alors âgé de 49 ans, le narrateur part pour l'Italie, afin d'y gagner sa vie comme enseignant. À la frontière suisse, il rencontre un riche paysan des Diablerets, Jean Morgeron. Il s'y arrête pour faire des travaux de terrassement, et prend racine. Après bien des hésitations, il finit même par épouser Félicie, la soeur de Jean... et découvre que celle-ci le trompe avec son cousin Tonino !Torturé de jalousie, il décide alors de la punir en la privant de toute relation intime. Et parvient, en effet, à la pousser au désespoir...
