About the Book

• iscusses the causes of component failure in service and materials that can resist such failure
• Explores ways of modifying the design of a component to make it more suitable for the material and manufacturing process
• Elucidates the trade-offs when selecting an optimum combination of material and manufacturing process for a given component under a given set of service conditions
• Provides recommendations for substitute materials and/or processes in order to improve a component’s performance, cost, or other attributes under a given set of service conditions
• Presents new and revised material, including environmental, function, and aesthetics considerations in design
• Provides a summary, review questions, suggested projects, and references in each chapter
• Features a companion website with PowerPoint presentations and a solutions manuals for instructors
Illuminating the holistic decision-making approach of concurrent engineering, Materials and Process Selection for Engineering Design, Second Edition illustrates how the activities of design, materials, and process selection, and economic and environmental analysis fit together and the tradeoffs that can be made when developing a new product or changing an existing model. The second edition adds and revises topics such as environmental, function, and aesthetics considerations in design; environmental impact assessment of materials and processes; life cycle and recycling economics; and materials substitution.
The book begins with an introductory chapter that reviews the stages of product development in industry. Part I discusses mechanical failures, environmental degradation, and the materials that are usually selected to resist the different types of failure. Part II explains the elements of engineering design and discusses the effect of material properties and manufacturing processes on the design of components. Part III reviews the economic and environmental aspects of materials and manufacturing processes and presents quantitative and computer-assisted methods of screening, ranking alternatives, and deciding on the optimum material and process combination. The author includes detailed case studies in materials selection and substitution from a variety of industries.
Each chapter begins with clearly stated goals and objectives and ends with a summary, review questions, and bibliography. Examples and case studies explain the subject and illustrate its practical application in engineering. Appendices supply tables of composition and properties of a wide variety of materials and a glossary of technical terms. SI units are used, but Imperial units are also given whenever possible. This student-friendly text demonstrates how to balance design, materials, process selection, and economic and environmental analysis to optimize manufacturing processes for a given component.
