El cálculo infinitesimal es una de las "herramientas matemáticas" más potentes que utiliza la ciencia en el estudio del mundo físico y sus leyes, y consiste en dos partes íntimamente relacionadas, el "cálculo diferencial" y el "cálculo integral", derivadas e integrales, siendo una de las operaciones (hallar la derivada de una función), inversa de la otra (integrar una función, invirtiendo el proceso de derivación). En el estudio del mundo natural hay que medir con la mayor precisión posible, las múltiples formas geométricas que existen en él, y que en muchos casos son muy irregulares, y no se pueden hacer tales mediciones con fórmulas sencillas de geometría elemental.También acontecen en él muchos procesos de cambio, cuyo estudio preciso, requiere conocer las "tasas de variación instantáneas", de los cambios que ocurren en tales procesos a medida que transcurre el tiempo.Cómo veremos después, estos dos problemas están muy relacionados; la clave del cálculo infinitesimal (diferencial e integral), se basa en el hecho de que cualquier forma geométrica, por muy irregular que sea, se puede medir con el grado de precisión que se requiera, si la consideramos compuesta ("dividida" o "fragmentada") por un número indefinido de partes, lo suficientemente pequeñas, como para que se puedan considerar "figuras regulares", cuyos valores se pueden calcular con facilidad, y después "sumarlos" o "integrarlos" todos.
