About the Book

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

The epic poem, Martín Fierro, is a masterpiece of Spanish-language literature that continues to define and inform Argentine culture today.

Originally published in two parts, the poem has been praised as a defining work of Argentine literature for its depiction of national identity in relation to the gaucho culture, which was used to consolidate the historical and political image of the country against European influence.

This is a poem of protest drawn from the life of the gaucho, who was forced to yield his freedom and individuality to the social and material changes that invaded his beloved pampas--a protest which arose from years of abuse and neglect suffered from landowners, militarists, and the Argentine political establishment.

The poem includes a magnificent introduction by writer Carlos Gamerro, who warns that Martín Fierro's world has practically become our world today and that it constitutes a crucial turning point in Argentine literature.
