About the Book

Der Dichter Martin Opitz (1597-1639) galt fur die Lyrik des fruhen 17. Jahrhunderts lange als richtungsweisend. Mit seinen Epistelliedern von 1628 setzte er die Tradition der protestantischen Perikopen-Bereimungen des 16. Jahrhunderts fort, vermittelte mit ihnen zugleich aber auch einen Neuansatz. 1666 gelangten die Texte des Liederzyklus geschlossen auch in die Berliner Ausgaben des von Johann Cruger begrundeten Gesangbuches "PRAXIS PIETATIS MELICA", wo sie bis 1703 ihren festen Platz hatten. Die Edition von Hans-Otto Korth folgt dem Erstdruck; die nachfolgenden Quellen des 17. Jahrhunderts einschliesslich der betreffenden "PRAXIS PIETATIS MELICA"-Ausgaben sind berucksichtigt. Daraufhin wird nicht nur ein aussagekraftiges Verbreitungs- und Variantenverzeichnis geboten, sondern es werden auch einige schwere Mangel des Erstdruckes und der fruhen Verbreitungen dingfest, die dann in der "PRAXIS PIETATIS MELICA" bereinigt wurden. Den Liedertexten sind die betreffenden Texte der Luther-Bibel synoptisch zur Seite gestellt, wodurch insbesondere Opitz' enge Anlehnung an sie, seine Sorgfalt und auch gelegentlich sein eigenes Verstandnis anschaulich werden. Ferner findet man die Melodien des sogenannten "Genfer Psalters" von 1662, mit denen Opitz seine Epistellieder ursprunglich verbunden haben wollte. In den Epistellieder-Drucken des 17. Jahrhunderts sind sie nicht enthalten; die Weisen konnten seinerzeit als bekannt vorausgesetzt werden. Hilfreich sind eine umfassende Einfuhrung und ein Wortverzeichnis.
