About the Book

This story is about the friendship of two preschool children, Martin and Miranda. They share--food, birthdays, and toys. They think about each other, offering the first piece of cake or pizza to their friend and reminding each other to make healthy choices. They enjoy quiet times, looking at pictures in books or helping each other put puzzles together. They play games, help each other to be safe, share experiences and pretend play, and do chores together. They tell each other secrets and give each other hugs. They are so happy to be friends! Young children do not automatically know how to be friends. This book helps children to talk about what friends do and how to be one. Parents or adults who work with children can have conversations using this book. Such topics as sharing, caring, playing, being safe and healthy, taking turns, doing chores, and enjoying experiences together make sense when pictures and words are discussed. The photos by Lise Guillemette of two adorable little ones in the Mexican context expressing their friendship makes the concepts easy to understand. Their joy in being with each other and playing together is evident. The book is bilingual, in English and Spanish, so young children can learn words in both languages. It is appropriate for children ages 2-6. The print is large, helping young readers negotiate the text. All profits from sale of this book benefit Rotary Club of San Miguel de Allende Midday. This organization focuses on friendship and peace through stove and water projects and others that benefit the community.
About the Author: LeoNora M. Cohen is an emeritus professor of education at Oregon State University. Her specialties are gifted, creative, and talented kids; coping; and children's interests. Her field, gifted education, shapes how she looks at all children: each is a precious gift with potential to be developed. As an undergraduate, Nora had been a Latin American Studies major, conducting research in Cali Colombia that greatly helped her Spanish fluency and led her to become a teacher and educator. But what she really loves is writing children's books! Maybe it is because she now has two adorable little grand children. She loves to read to them and to enter their magical worlds, feeding meatball "flies" to the little spider who has webbed all the furniture together with string; filling the dump truck with stones or playing with the little ones in the sand pile; building block towers to knock over with glee. In retirement, Nora spends winters in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, an enchanting UNESCO World Heritage town she first visited in 1971, taking painting and silver making classes. That's when she met her husband of over 42 years, who followed her to San Miguel from Guadalajara. In San Miguel, Nora volunteers with several non-profit organizations that help children and the greater community. To benefit these organizations, she writes bilingual children's books in English and Spanish, using her knowledge of children and her imagination to create books that help kids learn another language as well as to bring to light issues children face. Many of her books help children to develop their talents and aspirations, as well as to cope effectively with difficulties they face. And some books are full of whimsy and are just for fun! Nora is currently finishing her 24th book.
