Die Unterrichtseinheit widmet sich den Menschenrechten und welche Rollen sie im Zusammenleben spielen. Zu Beginn lernen die Schüler die grundlegenden Menschenrechte kennen und werden sich deren Relevanz bewusst, insbesondere für sie selbst im Alltag. Sie erarbeiten die Entwicklung der Menschenrechte und die Inhalte der Allgemeinen Erklärung der Menschenrechte der UN von 1948. Sie nehmen wahr, dass Menschenrechte nicht immer und überall gelten und auch in sogenannten "westlich-zivilisierten Staaten" verletzt werden. In der gezeigten Stunde erarbeiten die Schüler das Leben von Martin Luther King Jr. und dessen Einsatz gegen die Diskriminierung von Schwarzen in den USA. Sie begründen, wie er ein Vorbild für sie sein kann beim Einsatz gegen Diskriminierung in ihrem persönlichen Umfeld. Im weiteren Verlauf der Unterrichtseinheit recherchieren die Schüler nach Einsatzmöglichkeiten von Menschenrechtsorganisationen, wie z. B. Amnesty International und kirchlichen Hilfsorganisationen, wie z. B. Misereor und erarbeiten Möglichkeiten für ein persönliches Engagement. Die Schüler nehmen Verletzungen von Menschenrechten in der heutigen Zeit wahr und erarbeiten Hintergründe und Ursachen von Menschenrechtsverletzungen anhand des Beispiels der T-Shirt-Produktion. Sie erkennen, dass die Grundlagen für die Menschenrechte schon in der Bibel gelegt und auf die Gottesebenbildlichkeit zurückzuführen sind.
