Die beiden Abhandlungen Die Uberwindung der Metaphysik (1938/39) und Das Wesen des Nihilismus (1946-1948) gehoren zeitlich und formal nicht zusammen. Trotzdem bot es sich an, die beiden Texte in einem Band zu vereinigen, weil sie beide von unterschiedlichen Fragestellungen aus eine gemeinsame These behandeln: die These, dass das seinsgeschichtliche Wesen der Metaphysik Nihilismus ist. Die Uberwindung der Metaphysik ist fur Heidegger der entscheidende geschichtliche Augenblick, in dem die Metaphysik als Geschichte der Seinsverlassenheit erfahren und zugleich uberwunden wird. Die Seinsverlassenheit offenbart sich in der letzten und aussersten Steigerung der Metaphysik als unbedingte Vormacht der Machenschaft. Machenschaft bedeutet hier die alles beherrschende Machbarkeit des Seienden. Durch sie wird offenbar, dass das Sein des Seienden in der Metaphysik als Herstellung aus einer obersten Ursache oder einem hochsten Grund begriffen wird. Das Sein selbst bleibt hierbei ungedacht, weil in dieser Begrundung das Seiende in seinem Sein nur wieder durch ein anderes hochstes Seiendes erklart wird. Aus dieser seinsgeschichtlichen Erfahrung heraus ubernimmt die vorliegende Abhandlung die Aufgabe, die Wahrheit des Seyns als Ab-grund und Ereignis aus der Uberwindung der metaphysischen Begrundung des Seins zu durchdenken. An diesen Grundgedanken der Uberwindung knupft, und zwar von seiner seinsgeschichtlichen Bedingung der Machenschaft her, auch die zweite Abhandlung an: Das Wesen des Nihilismus. In dieser Abhandlung geht es um den Versuch, durch Nietzsches Wort Gott ist todt auf das Wesen des Nihilismus hinzuweisen. Die Totung Gottes entspringt dem Willen zur Macht als der aussersten Gestalt der Machenschaft. Das Sein des Seienden wird hierbei begriffen als Wertsetzung aus dem Willen zur Macht. In dieser Setzung des Seins als Wert kommt offen zum Vorschein, dass das Sein selbst in der Metaphysik ungedacht geblieben ist. Die Metaphysik ist demnach die Geschichte, in der es mit dem Sein selbst nichts ist, und aus diesem Grund ist die Metaphysik als solche der eigentliche Nihilismus.
