Martin Heideggers Vorlesung Einleitung in die Phanomenologie der Religion, gehalten im WS 1920/21, ist fur das Verstandnis seines fruhen Denkens von besonderer Bedeutung. Stellung wie sachlicher Rang dieser Vorlesung im Gesamtwerk bestimmen sich aus ihrem Gegenstand: an keiner anderen Stelle werden religiose Fragen mit solcher Ausfuhrlichkeit und exegetischer Genauigkeit behandelt. Heidegger verbindet eine Kritik der zeitgenossischen Religionsphilosophie (Troeltsch) mit methodischen Erwagungen zur Erschliessung der faktischen Lebenserfahrung in ihrer Geschichtlichkeit, um vor diesem Hintergrund die fruhesten Zeugnisse des Urchristentums einer eindringlichen phanomenologischen Analyse zu unterziehen. Am Phanomen der paulinischen Verkundigung arbeitet er Grundbestimmungen urchristlicher Religiositat heraus, an denen der Vollzugscharakter des faktischen Lebens erkennbar wird. Heideggers sachliche und personliche Annaherung an Edmund Husserl seit 1918 bedingte es, dass diese Analysen im Zeichen einer Phanomenologie der Religion standen, deren nahere Entwicklung Husserl seinem Schuler anvertraut hatte. Der II. Teil bringt den erstmals veroffentlichten Text der Vorlesungsausarbeitung fur das Sommersemester 1921 Augustinus und der Neuplatonismus, erganzt durch eine Reihe zeitgleicher Notizen, insbesondere zum Phanomen der tentatio, sowie durch die am Ende der Vorlesung vorgetragene Zwischenbetrachtung uber timor castus aus der Nachschrift von Oskar Becker. Der Hauptteil der Vorlesung gibt vom 10. Buch der Confessiones eine phanomenologische Interpretation, die auf einer sehr genauen und eindringlichen Textkommentierung beruht. Mit der Interpretation der drei Formen der tentatio (concupiscentia carnis, concupiscentia oculorum, ambitio saeculi) hat sich Heidegger die Grundlagen fur die spatere existenziale Analyse des Verfallens des Daseins verschafft. Der III. Teil enthalt Ausarbeitungen und Entwurfe zu der fur das WS 1919/20 angekundigten, aber nicht gehaltenen Vorlesung uber die philosophischen Grundlagen der mittelalterlichen Mystik, u. a. eine Vorarbeit zur Rezension des Buches von Rudolf Otto Das Heilige.
