Im Juni 1964 wurde die Rassentrennung in den USA offiziell abgeschafft, anlässlich der ersten Berliner Jazztage würdigte Martin Luther King kurz darauf die Bedeutung des Jazz für die Selbstfindung des modernen Menschen. Jazz gab der afroamerikanischen Freiheitsbewegung Kraft, Jazz wurde zum Symbol und Klang komplexer großstädtischer Lebenswelten. In einer Langzeitstudie hat Christian Broecking afroamerikanische Jazzmusiker nach ihrer Erfahrung und Bewältigung von Rassismus und Diskriminierung befragt. Die Ergebnisse der Jahre 1992 bis 2011 werden hier vorgelegt. Hinsichtlich ihrer politischen Intention und Haltung überwiegt der Wunsch, mit der Musik gesellschaftlich Einfluss nehmen zu wollen. Die Heterogenität der afroamerikanischen Kultur, wie sie von den Befragten reklamiert wird, ist mit einer schwarzen Opferrolle nicht mehr in Einklang zu bringen. Die Hoffnung auf eine Rückeroberung der gesellschaftlichen Wirksamkeit des afroamerikanischen Jazz, wie sie 1964 von Martin Luther King proklamiert wurde, hat sich mit seiner Institutionalisierung durch die Hochkultur nicht erfüllt. Christian Broecking ist mit seinem Buch eine außerordentlich differenzierte Aufarbeitung der gesellschaftlich relevanten Diskussion des afroamerikanischen Jazz gelungen. About the Author: Christian Broecking ist Soziologe und Musikwissenschaftler und schreibt u.a. für die Süddeutsche Zeitung, die Berliner Zeitung, die taz, die Zeit und Jazz thing. Dissertation über die gesellschaftliche Relevanz afroamerikanischer Musik. Broecking war Senior Research Associate an der Hochschule Luzern, am Winterthurer Institut für aktuelle Musik lehrt er Musikgeschichte; Lecturer an der Columbia University, New York, am Heidelberg Center for American Studies und für die Darmstädter Beiträge zur Jazzforschung. Broecking leitete JazzRadio Berlin von 1995 bis 1998, Klassik Radio Frankfurt von 2000 bis 2003, er ist Juror beim Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik und für NPR (National Public Radio).
