Indien ist einer dieser Wachstumsmärkte. Mit einem realen Netto-Wirtschaftswachstum von durchschnittlich 6,2 Prozent im Zeitraum 1993/94 - 2003/04, das auch von der Asienkrise nur unwesentlich beeinflusst wurde und einer Steigerung des realen Bruttoinlandsprodukts2 (BIP) von durchschnittlich 8,3 Prozent in den Wirtschaftsjahren 2004 bis 2008, gehört Indien zu den größten Wachstumsmärkten der Welt3. Gedämpft durch die weltweit anhaltende Finanzkrise, erwartet die Regierung Indiens für das Finanzjahr 2009/10 (1.4. bis 31.3.) einen Anstieg beim Bruttoinlandsprodukt von etwa 7,5%. Internationaler Währungsfonds (IWF) hingegen geht von einem Wachstum von höchstens 6,4 Prozent aus4. Indien ist bereits heute mit ca. 120-150 Mio. kaufkräftigen Einwohnern5 ein Absatzmarkt, der zunehmend in den Fokus von Unternehmen rückt, die ihre Wettbewerbspositionen ausbauen wollen. Allerdings ist der Sub-Kontinent auch ein Markt, der durch seine enorme Komplexität gekennzeichnet ist. Hier gibt es nicht nur eine unüberschaubare Zahl an Völkern, Sprachen und Religionen, sondern auch eine mehrere tausend Jahre alte, heute noch bedeutsame, kulturelle und gesellschaftliche Geschichte, die Indien weltweit einzigartig macht.
