In einer Befragung von deutschen Unternehmen durch PricewaterhouseCoopers/Sattler gaben 53% der Befragten an, dass Marken sogar zu den wichtigsten Einflussgrössen auf den Unternehmenserfolg gehören. Geht man von einem positiven Zusammenhang zwischen starken Marken und dem Wert eines Unternehmens aus, bedeutet dies, dass dem Markencontrolling im Hinblick auf die Steigerung des Unternehmenswertes eine wichtige Rolle zukommen kann. Marken können den Unternehmenswert auf unterschiedliche Weise beeinflussen: Sie erhöhen den Unternehmenswert indem sie freie Cash Flows erhöhen, deren Eintrittszeitpunkt beeinflussen, Schwankungen der Freien Cash Flows mindern oder den Restwert der Freien Cash Flows anheben können. Dadurch schaffen Marken nachhaltige Wettbewerbsvorteile, und Investitionen in die Marke steigern langfristig den Unternehmenswert. Trotzdem werden sie als Vermögenswert häufig unterschätzt und entsprechend vernachlässigt. Bei Investitionen in immaterielle Werte wie Marken fehlt zudem ein greifbarer Gegenwert, wodurch langfristig wirkenden Investitionen in Marken nur schwer durchsetzbar sind. Ohne richtige Pflege und laufende Investitionen verlieren Marken jedoch schnell an Wert. Des Weiteren gelten Markenaufbau und -pflege häufig nicht als strategische Führungsaufgaben sondern werden in den Aufgabenbereich des Marketing verlagert. Damit fehlt es in vielen Unternehmen an einer Stelle, die auf die langfristige Pflege und Stärkung der Marke aus ist. Das Ziel der Arbeit besteht darin, den Controllingzyklus von Dienstleistungsmarken in einer wertorientierten Unternehmensführung darzustellen. In einem ersten Teil der Arbeit werden daher der Begriff und die Besonderheiten von Dienstleistungen wie auch die Funktionen
