"The mark of the Beast", by Rudyard Kipling, is a story that speaks of the transformation of an irreverent and proud man, without any respect, who suffers a curse, as a result of an act of sacrilege, and is converted Lycanthrope, or werewolf. The author recounts an episode that occurred with two friends, Strickland and Fleete, English, in India.
According to the story, Fleete, a cultured and somewhat eccentric man, after a night of partying in which he ends up drunk, when chasing a horse that had escaped him, he entered a sacred temple when he heard voices and songs and a Once there, he kicks two monks who were praying, and commits an act of sacrilege by putting out his cigarette in front of the stone statue of the God Hanuman.
The friends try to get him out of there, but he objects, and exclaims that he has made the mark of the beast, and that he would stay there because the statue would be his pillow. The monks appear annoyed, and a man also appears from behind the statue, with shiny white skin (the silver man, they called him), affected by leprosy, according to the royalto, and assaults Fleete, giving him what appears to be a head butt on the chest. After this, the monks seem to calm down, and ask them, in English, to leave the place and take Fleete away. - Your Friend has finished with Hanuman, but Hanuman has not finished with him "-they tell them.
They take him to Strickland's house, and put him to sleep, but when they wake up they see a wound that Fleete has on the left side of his chest, an intense pink color, which later turns dark, resembling the spots of a leopard. They also notice that he begins to behave strangely different, sullen, and with an anxiety to eat raw meat, and that he does not seem to be satisfied after eating. As the day passes, Fleete's behavior becomes more aggressive, to the point of becoming barbaric, and even beastly, and already at night they notice in him a strange pleasure in rolling around in mud, going out for a walk at night Half naked, and the light seems to irritate him, is when they realize that he has transformed into a beast, apparently.
They request the help of a doctor, Dumoise, who comes to treat Fleete, at the request of Strickland, and after examining him, he diagnoses him badly with rabies, or hydrophobia, and that there was no longer a remedy for him. They decide to tie the sick man to a bed, and realize that it is probably a curse for having insulted the deity.
They do not take long to notice that Fleete seems to be disturbed, and they realize that it is due to a howl, like a beast, in the surroundings of the house. They realize that it is the silver man, who is there. And that's when they make a decision: to capture the silver man to free his friend from the curse.
Having achieved their goal, they force the leper-beast-silver man to remove Fleete's disease, and once their goal is achieved, they decide to release the leper, thus achieving Fleete's peace and sleep.
Finally, upon awakening the next day, Fleete does not seem to remember anything of what happened, and by the time Dumoise, the doctor, arrives to examine him, he finds him healthy. But Fleete, who is well, and in a very good mood, seems to have been left with an acuity of the senses typical of an animal.
