Die Folgen für die deutsche Wirtschaft wären verheerend und die Arbeitslosenzahl würde in Deutschland von aktuell 3,156 Millionen (stand Februar 2013, Anm. d. A.) um ca. 225.000 auf knapp 3,4 Millionen Arbeitssuchende anwachsen. Besonders hart dürfte dieses Szenario aber die Stadt Wolfsburg treffen, welche bekanntlich als Arbeitersiedlung des dort erbauten Volkswagen-Werkes entstanden ist. Rund ein Drittel der 122.000 Einwohner der Stadt Wolfsburg sind heute in der dort direkt beim VW-Konzerns angestellt und schätzungsweise ein weiteres Drittel ist indirekt damit verbunden (Dienstleister, Zulieferer u.ä.). Die Folgen für die Stadt, welche sich aus einer plötzlichen Arbeitslosigkeit eines Drittels Ihrer Einwohner ergeben würden, sind kaum auszumalen. Die Einwohner von Marienthal mussten im Jahre 1929 leider aber genau diese Erfahrung machen. Innerhalb kürzester Zeit verloren ca. 1300 von ca. 1500 Einwohnern ihren Job. Im Gegensatz zum heutigen globalen Zeitalter, in welchem die Arbeit des Unternehmens aus New York in München erledigt werden kann und ein beruflicher Umzug in eine andere Stadt alltäglich praktiziert wird, befanden sich die Marienthaler damals in einer ausweglosen Situation. Aufgrund der Weltwirtschaftskrise war auch im weiteren Umkreis keinerlei Arbeit zu finden. Die psychischen und sozialen Auswirkungen auf die betroffenen Menschen und das Leben in ihrem Dorf sind noch heute kaum vorstellbar und waren zu der damaligen Zeit in keinster Weise nachzuvollziehen. Darum entschloss sich eine österreichische Forschungsgruppe eben diese durch eine Studie zu erforschen.
