Eine oft und gern genutzte Ausdrucksform für die menschliche Selbstdarstellung ist die literarische Autobiographie. Sie bildet zwischen dem, was ein Mensch ist, und dem, was er sein möchte eine Art Brücke. In der Autobiographie beschäftigt sich der Schreibende retrospektiv mit seinem eigenem Leben, indem er versucht aus der Gegenwart heraus, dem vergangenem Leben einen Sinn zu geben, bzw. diesen zu Erkennen. Marek Hlasko ist fünfunddreißig Jahre alt geworden, einige Erzählungen, wenige Romane hat er hinterlassen. Ob seine Werke die gleiche Aura umgeben würde, wäre er nicht so früh gestorben und hätte weitere Erzählungen oder Romane geschrieben, ist schwer zu sagen. Dazu liegen die Urteile über sein literarisches Talent zu weit auseinander: War er ein großes Talent, ein begnadeter Realist und Schöpfer einer neuen Literatur, wie die einen behaupten? Oder, wie die anderen meinen, ein mittelmäßiger Autor. Über diese Fragen wird bis heute gestritten. Nur über eins ist man sich einig, er wurde zur einer Legende. Bei Die Schönen Zwanzigjährigen handelt es sich auf jeden Fall um einen autobiographischen Text und dennoch wird diese literarische Form von dem Autor eher als eine weitere Möglichkeit seines ständigen Selbstdarstellungsdranges und der Legendenbildung, denn zur rückblickenden Erforschung seines Lebens genutzt. Es ist eher das Selbstporträt eines bekennenden Erzählers, in dem er erlebte Situationen neben erfundenen stellt, authentische Figuren mit fiktiven vermischt und sein Leben in Polen und im Ausland Revue passieren lasst. Parallel rechnet er mit den westlichen Gesellschaften ab, die sich in ihrem Unwissen und ihrer Gleichgültigkeit weigern, die Wahrheit über das Leben im kommunistischen Machtbereich zu akzeptieren.
