- Nouvelle edition brochee de l'edition parue a l'origine chez Hazan en 1999. Une monographie documentee et richement illustree reproduisant la totalite de l'oeuvre de Duchamp. La contribution la plus importante a la connaissance de Duchamp depuis l'exposition du Palazzo Grassi en 1993 et son catalogue.

A mesure que le siecle s'acheve, artistes, historiens et critiques s'accordent a considerer que Duchamp a exerce une influence des plus determinantes sur l'art du XXe siecle en particulier, sur les mouvements Pop, Arte Povera ou Conceptuel. A lui seul il est parvenu a changer notre maniere de considerer l'art de notre temps et jusqu'a sa definition meme. L'ouvrage de Francis M. Naumann offre l'avantage d'etre une monographie tres documentee qui associe a l'etude chronologique de l'oeuvre une grille de lecture des concepts d'appropriation et de replique au moyen desquels Duchamp a revolutionne l'Art occidental au debut du XXe siecle. A partir de 1912, Duchamp recherche une solution de remplacement a la pratique artistique traditionnelle. Il revendique un style d'elaboration mecanique de l'art qui passe par la suppression du travail de la main. Naumann decrit dans le detail comment appropriation et duplication vont donc devenir des strategies artistiques operationnelles dans l'oeuvre de Duchamp. D'abord grace au ready-made, qui consiste a extraire un objet (urinoir, roue de bicyclette) de son environnement fonctionnel, et par lequel il opere un acte esthetique avec la seule aide de l'intellect, par un choix de l'esprit. Mais ensuite, qui dit ready-made dit necessairement duplication, copies qui sont dans la nature meme de la production de ces objets de serie, meme labellises comme oeuvre d'art. Naumann demontre comment Duchamp ne se privera pas de systematiser les principes conjoints du ready-made et de la replique, jouant sans cesse des ambiguites de la notion d'oeuvre originale en signant des copies conformes ou des copies non conformes. Il ira meme jusqu'a creer un musee miniature retrospectif de son oeuvre, avec la celebre Boite en valise, sans oublier l'exploration poetique des plus infimes variantes qui existent entre les copies a travers le concept exploratoire de infra-mince.
