About the Book

English summary: Evil is always and everywhere sang the pop-rock band Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung in 1986 with an ironic twist. However, this sentence can also reflect existential experiences with deep seriousness. Phenomena such as lies, violence, and wars are exemplarily linked to what we call evil and what fundamentally threatens our existence and our coexistence. It can be understood as a force of negativity, as an abstract (or even substantial) reality, as an antagonistic principle of good, or as an expression of concrete morally misguided actions. Theologically, it is necessary to reflect on how talk of God can be placed in relation to the reality of evil. The question of the causes of evil therefore also raises the problem of theodicy and the longing for redemption from evil. The contributions from the subjects of Old Testament (Friedhelm Hartenstein) and New Testament (Michael Wolter) as well as Systematic Theology (Heiko Schulz, Dietrich Korsch) address this challenging topic.
