About the Book

- Marbling is a craft that is gaining in popularity; evidence of that is its revival in Japan in particular and in the current resurgence of interest in crafting - A beautiful book with rich photography highlighting a centuries-old craft that until recently was neglected for many years - A highly practical resource for anyone who wants to try paper marbling, as well as a useful reference for anyone who has tried marbling and wants to take things further - Offers step-by-step guidance on how to make many the popular patterns, with written and visual instructions In one volume Jemma Lewis offers a companion to and a guide through the centuries-old craft of paper marbling. It will delight booklovers, along with those considering the wide range of decorative uses for marbling. Generously illustrated to show a huge variety of paper patterns and styles, it is a practical source, offering information and instruction, and also an inspiration. The beautiful photographs not only display a wealth of examples but also provide insight into a modern marbling studio. Step-by-step instructions are provided, along with advice on such aspects as marbling with metallic paints, and on how to create your own marbled products. Lewis provides a short history of marbling over its thousand or so known years, taking readers through the earliest documented form by offering a lesson in Suminagashi. This ancient Japanese marbling technique literally means 'floating ink'. The book showcases many traditional and well-known marbled designs. Readers will find the review of the equipment, tools and materials required invaluable. Particularly useful for those considering having their own enterprise are the series of checklists and the forms that may be used for keeping records and noting ideas. All in all, the book brings a traditional craft with magical, mysterious and even alchemical nuances that has been somewhat neglected for many years into the 21st century.
About the Author: Jemma Lewis is one of the few professional marblers working in the UK. She runs Jemma Lewis Marbling & Design from a small log-cabin studio at the bottom of the garden with the assistance of her husband Craig, cat Milo and their dog. Lewis studied Textile Art at Norwich School of Art & Design. Upon returning home to Wiltshire she began working at a traditional bookbinders' studio. There she first became interested in hand-marbled papers, seeing them both inside and on the covers of antique books that were being restored. Several years later Lewis had the chance to train at Ann Muir Marbling. She started her own marbling company, which was set up with her father, in early 2009. The company now works with clients all over the world.
