La jihad o guerra santa declarada contra la civilización occidental, es desarrollada por terroristas bien entrenados, que pretenden destruir a los Estados Unidos y sus asociados por medios políticos y armados.La fanatizada motivación político-religiosa de corte sunista salafista, induce los yihadistas a morir como mártires en las llamadas batallas de la guerra santa, en aras de alcanzar el paraíso, principal razón para que suicidas cargados con explosivos, se inmolen entre la población civil, como parte activa de la búsqueda del caos social, político y económico. Entre agosto de 1988 y finales de 1989, Osama Bin Laden creó una red terrorista conocida como al Qaeda ('la Base'), integrada por militantes musulmanes, en su mayoría combatientes en Afganistán, tales como su lugarteniente Aymán al-Zawahirí. Desde entonces, este grupo financió y organizó varios ataques terroristas en diversos países del mundo, incluidos la detonación de carros-bomba contra blancos estadounidenses en Arabia Saudita en 1996, el asesinato de turistas occidentales en Egipto en 1997 y los ataques en 1998 con carros-bomba simultáneos contra las embajadas estadounidenses en Nairobi (Kenia) y en Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), en los cuales murieron 224 personas y miles quedaron heridas. Entre 1996 y 1998, Osama Bin Laden emitió una serie de fatwas ('decretos religiosos') declarando la guerra santa contra Estados Unidos, país al cual acusó de saquear los recursos naturales del entorno musulmán y de ayudar e incitar a los enemigos del islam. La intención estratégica de Bin Laden era involucrar a Estados Unidos en una desgastante guerra a gran escala en el entorno musulmán, que terminaría con los gobiernos musulmanes moderados y restablecería el califato, para regir un único Estado musulmán.Para cumplir la ambiciosa misión, Al Qaeda entrenó y equipó miles de terroristas gracias a la ayuda de la cuantiosa riqueza de Osama Bin Laden. A sus filas llegaron seguidores provenientes de diversos lugares como Arabia Saudita, Yemen, Libia, Bosnia, Chechenia y las Filipinas.El 1 de mayo de 2011, la Casa Blanca informó que Osama bin Laden murió durante una incursión aeroterrestre de las Fuerzas Militares de Estados Unidos, en una operación secreta en Abbottabad, Pakistán, ciudad ubicada a 50 kilómetros al noreste de Islamabad y 150 kilómetros al oriente de Peshawar. Barack Obama indicó que la operación fue realizada por un pequeño grupo, que actuó bajo sus órdenes y contó con ayuda del gobierno pakistaní. La identidad de Osama Bin Laden se confirmó, comparando muestras conservadas de ADN de su hermana fallecida años antes.
