Leur fuite les conduit de Paris à la province, et de la richesse à la misère, chaque étape de leur périple ajoutant une nouvelle dimension à leur tragédie. À Paris, ils goûtent brièvement au luxe, mais leurs ressources s'épuisent rapidement. Des Grieux se voit contraint de renouer avec la famille pour obtenir de l'aide, mais leurs plans échouent et Manon est arrêtée pour prostitution. Leur amour est mis à l'épreuve par la brutalité des circonstances, mais leur attachement reste inébranlable.

L'exil en Louisiane marque une tentative désespérée de recommencer à zéro, loin des jugements et des persécutions. Cependant, même dans ce nouveau monde, les fantômes du passé les rattrapent. La société coloniale, aussi rigide et intransigeante que celle qu'ils ont fuie, ne leur offre pas le refuge espéré. La maladie et les privations achèvent de détruire leurs espoirs, menant à la fin tragique de Manon, qui meurt dans les bras de des Grieux, épuisée et désespérée.
