Deshalb erhält Wilhelm den lang ersehnten Auftrag von König Louis IX. für eine abenteuerliche, diplomatische Friedensmission zu den Mongolen. Sie soll Frieden stiften und die Mongolen als Verbündete zur Verteidigung des Heiligen Landes gegen die Muslime gewinnen. Die Mission stellt einen Aufbruch in eine neue Welt dar. Der einfache Franziskanermönch wird zum Welteneroberer. Es geht, teils auf der Seidenstraße, durch gefährliche Landschaften und zu feindlichen Bewohnern. Wilhelm und seine Begleiter reisen durch eine Wildnis voller Gefahren. Was niemand für möglich gehalten hatte, geschieht: Anfang 1254, nach einer über einjährigen Reise, wird Wilhelm vom mongolischen Großkhan Möngke in Karakorum der Hauptstadt der Mongolen, als Gesandter empfangen. König Louis bietet den Mongolen eine Allianz gegen den gemeinsamen Feind, die Muslime des Mittelalters, an.
About the Author: Rolf A. Meyer, geboren 1943, lebt mit seiner Frau am Zürichsee in der Schweiz. Eine Transsibirien-Express-Reise von Moskau nach Peking mit Besuch der Mongolei und Stammbaumforschungen einer verstorbenen Rubruk-Großtante weckten sein Interesse am Entdecker, Asienreisenden und Gesandten Wilhelm Rubruk. Später besuchte der Autor auch den mittleren Abschnitt der Seidenstraße in Zentralasien - Kasachstan, Usbekistan, Turkmenistan. Der historische Roman, "Der Mann, der Marco Polo zuvorkam", spielt im 13. Jahrhundert und ist sein Erstlingswerk.
