Nur sehr langsam setzt sich in den Sozialwissen- schaften die Ansicht durch, da das eigene Tun nicht unwesentlich von den jeweiligen gesellschaftlichen Strukturen abhangt und sich daraus auch eine Verantwortung gegeniiber der GeseHschaft ergibt. Eng damit verbunden ist das Problem des Wissenschaftsverstandnisses, das den jeweiligen Untersuchungen zugrunde liegt. Die Forschungspraxis wird von einem Pragmatismus dominiert, der vor allem im Bereich der Massenkommunikation strukturelle Erkenntnisse zugunsten von Einzel- fragen vor aHem wirtschaftlicher Interessen verstellt. Die Abhlingigkeiten vom eigenen Gesellschaftsbild, das meist unbewuBt in den Forschungs- proze mit einflie t, bleiben wie die sozialen, wirtschaftlichen und politischen Funktionen der untersuchten Phlinomene in der Regel unreflektiert. Das bislang vorliegende Material der Demokratieforschung allgemein (I) wie das der Massenkommunikationsforschung speziell ist weitgehend durch einen formalen Demokratiebegriff und einen individualist, schen Ansatz gepragt. Dabei stehen die Gesellschaft oder das politische System gar nicht mehr kritisch zur Debatte, sondern der einzelne wird dahingehend untersucht, inwiefern sein Verhalten fUr die Gesellschaft wie fUr ihn selbst "gesund" ist.
