Die meisten Schwalben sind fort, hie und da auf den Stoppeln nesteln schon Spinnenfäden, und sie müssen einen krummen Rücken machen, um vorwärts zu kommen. So stand es um den Röhrsdorfer Schneider. Der Weg, den er ging, schwirrte schon manchmal vor seinen Blicken wie eine gespannte Schnur, die jemand anreißt, und er mußte seine Augen einkneifen, damit er nicht rechts oder links abkam, irgendwohin, wo er nichts zu suchen hatte. Dies genaue Hinlugen hatte schon allerhand Gekritzel auf seine Schläfe geschrieben, und über den Ohren bauschten sich seine Haare weiß. Manchmal stand er auf der Lehne hinter seinem Hause und betrachtete die Welt: die Bauern, die über das Feld pflügten; die Holzfuhrleute neben ihren hohen Rädern oder den Bäcker, der in seinem Planwägelchen vorbeischnurrte. Und wenn er so eine Weile hinuntergesehen hatte, nahm er sein Taschentuch heraus, breitete es aus, als wolle er etwas hineinpacken, faltete es aber wieder zusammen und schob es in den Rock. Denn man mochte die Gedanken so oder so wenden, Eusebius Mandel konnte es nicht leugnen, die andern kamen leichter und fröhlicher vorwärts als er.
