About the Book

The gradual opening up of the Indian economy and loosening of government controls on corporate growth has led to increased competition. This has put pressure on organizations' human resources to effectively meet the challenge through improved productivity and involvement. Managing Human Resources explores HRM concepts, issues and practices. The focus of this book is on the 'individual employee'. The chapter "Human Resources - An Overview" is the starting point of the journey to enhanced productivity - an examination of the proverbial 'walking that extra mile'. The need for a link between corporate strategy and HR strategy is discussed. The downstream effect of such a linkage on subsystems is also examined. The ultimate objective of subsystems and its linkage to company viability is also focused on. The case studies, collected from companies which take pride in their HR management, try to explore issues regarding HRM practices in a cross-section of organizations, both in the manufacturing and the service sector, among multinationals and Indian companies. About The Author:

Arun Monappa has been a professor at IIM Ahmedabad since 1972. Prior to this he worked in industry, starting his career in 1964 in the personnel area. He received his M.A. from Madras University and M.Sc. from London School of Economics, where he studied as a J.N. Tata scholar. He was Teaching Fellow at the International Institute of Labour Studies at Geneva. He has published many books and articles in this field.
