About the Book

Ever since the establishment of the first School of Correspondence course at the University of Delhi in 1962, today in India besides four full-fledged Distance education Teaching Universities, more than 33 Universities are offering correspondence courses. Through as visualized, these institutions have to a great extend succeeded in tacking the problems caused due to Numerus Clauses in Formal higher education by enrolling an admitted in the regular on campus courses. However, qualitatively the system of Distance Education (DE) in India has bot been very innovative and has failed to provide efficient support service to boost independent learning. The system, in face appears to be tracking the three decade old path of dispatching the learning materials followed by a ritual of organizing a few days personal contact programme. Through provision of support services in DE involves additional expenditure, but their efficiency is largely determined by the management practices adopted to provide them. Since majority of DE institutions are running in profits, non-availability of funds cannot be th cause of inefficient support services. It is in this contact that the book in hand is an important document, as it is based on a national level study (funded by NIEPA, New Delhi) that has undertaken the evaluation of the systems adopted for the management of various aspects of teaching and learning in the existing correspondence institutes in India. This book is a very comprehensive document which takes an in-depth evaluative stock of the of the practices and procedures adopted for the management of the material system, dispatch system, assignment system, personal contact system, study centre support system, other support systems and the evaluation system to effectively organize distance teaching and learning. Detailed evaluation of these sub-systems is presented in separate chapters along-with concrete suggestions of management strategies which can be adopted to improve the functioning of the entire system besides providing more efficient support services to distance learners. Last but not the last the book should serve as a handbook for teachers and researchers in the field of DE, as the vast amount of dates contained in it generates several hypotheses and issues for further research.About the AuthorBorn in 1955, Dr. H.C.S.
