Synopsis:
Le récit débute à Vienne, alors que le nazisme se lève et que les Autrichiens accueillent Hitler en libérateur. L'antisémitisme se déchaîne, les Juifs sont humiliés et persécutés. Durant la Nuit de Cristal, la famille de Harry fuit vers la Belgique, mais la guerre les rattrape à Charleroi en 1940.
Arthur., emprisonné comme espion parce qu'il parle allemand, laisse Harry et F. fuir seuls vers le Nord de la France, errant parmi des millions de réfugiés affamés et démunis. Le retour à Charleroi, désormais sous occupation allemande, est marqué par des mesures antisémites de plus en plus oppressives: interdiction de travailler, d'aller à l'école publique, d'aller au cinéma, de s'asseoir sur un banc public... En 1942, la famille de Harry est arrêtée et envoyée au camp de Malines, le préambule d'Auschwitz.
Feigla et la Résistance:
Feigla, devenue messagère pour la Résistance, transporte des faux papiers et de l'argent pour aider les Juifs cachés. Elle tombe amoureuse, mais le temps et le lieu ne sont pas propices à l'amour.
Harry et sa mère:
Caché chez l'habitant et dans des établissements religieux, Harry apprend à surmonter ses peurs et à vivre avec l'absence de F., qui passe en coup de vent pour lui apporter chaleur et réconfort. Harry cherche désespérément Dieu, mais trouve son salut dans l'amour de Jean, Marie, Louise et Henry qui le protègent des rafles.
Arthur et l'errance:
Arthur découvre l'horreur d'Auschwitz, où il va disparaître sans laisser de traces. Le récit tente de rendre compte de sa route.
