About the Book

A Missionary to Mozambique! Her husband's announcement reverberates as Hattie Bennett walks to their son's grave. Five months pregnant, she wrestles with John's call to the mission field. The family leaves the Kansas prairie after the birth of their third son. The Lincoln family and two single women accompany them. In Africa, Mrs. Lincoln dies, the Bennett family has life-threatening bouts of malarial fevers, lose financial support from their mission board, discover another missionary's extramarital affair, deal with a threat of war between an African king and his chiefs, and wild animal attacks on livestock. This work of creative non-fiction is based on the diaries of a pioneer missionary. Malarial Fevers unveils the early missionary activities in southeast Africa and the impact of Portuguese colonization on African society. It reveals the complexity of supporting missionaries and mission programs when communications depend on letters carried by ship. Jonna-Lynn K. Mandelbaum wrote THE MISSIONARY AS A CULTURAL INTERPRETER to earn a doctorate in education from Georgia State University. She also holds a master's degree in public health from The Johns Hopkins University. Jonna-Lynn received her nursing diploma from Philadelphia's Methodist Hospital School of nursing and a bachelor's degree from Lebanon Valley College in Pennsylvania prior to her appointment as a United Methodist missionary nurse to Mozambique. International health was the dominant focus of her professional career. She developed and implemented educational programs for health professionals around the world. Now retired, she resides in northern New Mexico with her husband and two dogs. To find out more visit www.jonna-lynn.com.
