About the Book

The £21billion adult care sector in England is stimulating, challenging and hugely rewarding. If you are planning to work in it, then this book is for you. You may also find it useful if want to re-evaluate your career in adult care or just want to know more about how it all works. It is an easy-to-read book that will enable you to think about what is really important to you in a career. Exercises and sensible advice are combined with stories from leading figures in the sector about how they started and progressed. There are many ways that you can really make a difference to people and take on a leadership role. This book is intended to ignite your ambition to do so and direct you to the most appropriate area in the sector, which might be in a local council, working for a charity, managing a commercial company, getting involved in policy at a national level - or quietly setting a great example to your peers, colleagues, clients and their carers. Social work student, Sophie D says: "Your book is very valuable for first year social work students. The interactive-ness of the book helped me immensely. A great read!" David Brindle, reviewing this book in The Guardian, writes: this "idiosyncratic guide ... draws on interviews with achievers in public, voluntary and for-profit care services, setting exercises for the reader to self-assess suitability to follow in their tracks."
About the Author: Richard Pantlin is a leading independent expert on English Adult Social Care systems. He advises the government on the information system implications of policy changes. In September 2013 the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS) published his report on the government's care funding reforms: 'Implementing Dilnot: just more data or a driver for change?' He continues to work with ADASS, helping councils prepare for the Care and Support Act and for a more integrated collaboration with the NHS. In 2012 Richard managed the design and development of 'FindMeGoodCare.co.uk' for the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE). He also developed a service, with the Oxford Health Foundation Trust and Neighbourhood Watch, for volunteers to help find people with dementia who go missing. He previously had various management roles in commercial companies supplying the social care and local government sector. Richard offers his own style of one-to-one coaching and support to leaders in the health & social care sector - 'CareStellations' - applying the powerful methodology of systemic constellations to organisations. See www.richardpantlin.com for more details. He is also the founder of Socially Enterprising Services Ltd.
