La Maitrise du devenir est le but que poursuivent tous les agents sociaux mais ils s'opposent entre eux sur le contenu a donner aux valeurs qui leur sont communes, celles de liberte, de justice, de verite et de solidarite. Les uns et les autres le determinent en appelant a des principes de philosophie naturelle differents. Le Chretien entre dans cette aire de conflit pour tenter de convaincre ceux qui y sont engages de ce que le Christ est celui qui donne sens aux aspirations de l'homme a etre plus . L'accomplissement de cette mission demande de leur part une adaptation constante, un aggiornamento pour reprendre l'expression de Jean XXII, de l'heritage doctrinal qu'ils ont recu des generations passees pour le liberer de ce qu'il contient d'apports dus a des circonstances historiques particulieres. Cette purification (Benoit XVI) exige de lui a la fois qu'il se mette a l'ecole des changements qui s'operent dans la societe et qu'il approfondisse sa connaissance interieure du mystere du Christ. Telle est l'operation realisee par Vatican II et notamment Gaudium et Spes pour la societe qui avait emerge de la guerre. On peut se demander si les difficultes rencontrees aujourd'hui par l'Eglise en Occident ne trouvent pas leur origine dans le fait qu'on a cru avoir realise une fois pour toutes l'adaptation de l'enseignement social de l'Eglise au monde moderne ? N'a-t-on pas sous-evalue le processus de changement accelere par les decouvertes de la science et la mise en cause des valeurs qui avaient ete regardees comme evidentes jusqu'en 1939 ? Des situations en decoulent (qu'il s'agisse du vieillissement des populations, de la contestation de la famille, de la rencontre des cultures, de l'environnement, du terrorisme etc.) auxquelles on a tente de repondre en s'aidant des schemes habituels au lieu de saisir la nouveaute des questions qu'elles posent a ceux qui cherchent a incarner l'Evangile dans la vie ? L'evangelisation pour etre nouvelle demande, comme l'ont remarque plusieurs participants du synode sur ce theme (2012), un effort constant de l'analyse sociale car les obstacles a la foi ont leur racine dans des situations qui rivent les esprits sur l'horizon terrestre et le mettent sous la dependance des forces du mal. Les articles ici rassembles jettent une lumiere sur la transformation subie par la presence de l'Eglise dans le monde au cours des cinquante dernieres annees. Leur auteur a ete un temoin du mouvement des idees qui a eu lieu durant cette periode en tant que conseiller du Directeur General du Bureau international du Travail (1956-1981) puis comme professeur a la Faculte des Sciences sociales de l'universite Gregorienne a partir de 1981; il a egalement servi durant cette derniere periode en tant qu'expert a la section pour les relations avec les Etats de la Secretairerie d'Etat et assume les fonctions d'assistant ecclesiastique du CICIAMS (Comite international catholique des infirmieres et assistants medicaux sociaux)
