Dans ce cas, la charmante série d'engouements, d'endearments et de cross-purposes délicieusement comiques est mis en rotation par Fanny Turner, dont le passe-temps favori s'efforce de fournir une succession de mariées possibles pour l'ancien ami d'école de son mari, le charmant, sinon particulièrement admissible, Valentine Ensor. Les tentatives exubérantes et erronées de Fanny pour faire correspondre produisent un enchevêtrement étourdissant de mésaventures romantiques lorsque les invités de vacances se présentent avec une fille attirante et très mariée en remorque. La prose élégante de l'auteur et sa comédie généreuse, mais très observatrice, offrent un festin de lecture cultivé, nourrissant, rafraîchissant et réparateur.Le village de Worsted met en scène Hippolyte sous l'égide de l'infatigable Mme Palmer. Compte tenu de ce contexte, il semble inévitable que les romances les plus absurdes devraient fleurir, comme ils le font en effet. Les romans de l'auteur fournissent un examen des manières britanniques victoriennes et édouardiennes dans les doses les plus divertissantes.Puis, l'auteur poursuit la saga de l'irrépressible Tony Morland. Un vrai garçon doit se cacher quelque part à l'arrière-plan car il serait impossible de faire un parasite aussi monumental. Les adultes comme les enfants sont au sol dans la soumission par son bavardage éternel et la suressuration de l'estime de soi . Seuls le Dr Ford, dont la conversation avec Tony se limite à l'expression Tais-toi et Sylvia Gould, l'instructrice de natation, qui expose la capacité de plongée vantée de Tony comme bidon, s'approchent même temporairement de lui annuler. Tony et son ami silencieux Donk (mais comment pourrait-il être autrement autour de Tony?) sont appelés les petits garçons à l'âge de treize ans et Rose, quatorze ans, est réconforté par Mme Morland tout en la tenant sur ses genoux; comment les temps ont changé! Peut-être réunis par une exaspération commune envers Tony, le Dr Ford et Sylvia semblent se diriger vers l'autel. Il serait maintenant politiquement correct de décrire Tony comme intrinsèquement aimable; mais c'est une tâche trop héroïque pour un auteur honnête.Une double affaire s'ouvre avec le mariage du vicaire Choyce à la mère de famille Mlle Dorothea ( Merry ) Merriman. Il se termine par les doubles mariages de George Halliday et John Crosse à Jane et Grace Crawley, d'âge convenable, après avoir soudainement fait leur apparition. Heureusement, les jeunes gens tombent rapidement et obligatoirement amoureux. En cours de route, le problème de Mme Halliday, le parent veuf, est exploré jusqu'à ce que cette relique prenne en charge sa propre vie, s'enlevant non seulement pour vivre avec un cousin sympathique à Northbridge, mais plus tard pour résidence permanente sur la Riviera de Français; au soulagement non mélangé de son fils et de sa fille. Voilà pour le nid vide et doting granny-hood. Et si quelqu'un se souvient qu'Edith Graham a, d'un seul coup, perdu deux de ses quasi-prétendants, être de bonne humeur, Lord William Harcourt est commodément apparu dans les coulisses.Gordon Lafitte se distingue por su noble, grande y polifacética eficacia como autor, que a su vez se distingue siempre por la singular frescura de la inspiración y por una pureza de alma que rara vez se encuentra en otros de esta forma.
