योग की साधना आध्यात्मिक ज्ञान की साधना है। मनुष्य का शरीर ईश्वर की आध्यात्मिक शक्तियों की संरचना है। इन शक्तियों का ज्ञान प्राप्तकर उस परम चेतनाशक्ति आत्मा का ज्ञान प्राप्त करना ही जीवन का मुख्य लक्ष्य है। योग संकल्प की साधना है और आत्मा में स्थित होने का विज्ञान है अतः हम शरीर के सभी अंगों द्वारा सुचारू रूप से अपनी क्रियायें करते हुए योग में स्थित हों क्योंकि योग में स्थित हुए बिना मनुष्य की बुद्धि कभी स्थिर नहीं रहती और बुद्धि के स्थिर हुए बिना मनुष्य का किया कोई भी कार्य अच्छा परिणाम नहीं दे सकता। गीता में कहा है" तेरी बुद्धि जब परमात्मा में अचल और स्थिर ठहर जायेगी तब तू योग को प्राप्त हो जायेगा।" अत : आत्मज्ञान की साधना को ही योग कहा जाता है । यह पातंजल योग सूत्र - योग दर्शन अपने आप में पूर्ण, सार्वभौम एवं वैज्ञानिक है। ध्यान रखें कि किसी ग्रन्थ को पढ़कर आत्मज्ञान नहीं होता और बिना आत्मज्ञान के मुक्ति नहीं होती लेकिन इस ग्रन्थ में बतलाया गया मार्ग अपने आप में पूर्ण है। इस ग्रन्थ की व्याख्या का उद्देश्य है कि योगसाधना के प्रति अपनी रुचि जाग्रत हो क्योंकि इस मार्ग पर चलकर ही मानवजाति का कल्याण सम्भव है। The practice of yoga is the practice of spiritual knowledge.
