About the Book

Some very magical blueberries have washed up on the American shores. Where did they come from? A long time ago, as all Irish children know, tiny fairies created some magical blueberries. When eaten by tiny animals they are magically able to speak to the tiny people. But you must be tiny to hear them speak. It is said that children can hear them too! So look for the blueberry patches and you just might get to hear their stories. Afraid of the Dark is a story about a little hermit crab named Happy. Happy is afraid of the dark and doesn't want to sleep in her own bedroom. But her mommy has an idea that might help. Go on an adventure to explore a cave with Happy and her tiny talking friends. Will Happy be able to face her fear of the dark and sleep in her own bed? What will Happy and her friends find in the cave? Written by a teacher, this is a funny illustrated story that will help children to face their own fear of the dark. All children will enjoy this story and may be able to relate to being afraid of something, no matter what it may be. Search for Bubbles, the little blue crab on each page. Bubbles will be featured in another Magical Blueberry Tale about being afraid to go to school.
About the Author: Tara Michelle Fischer is passionate about writing and illustrating books for children; and being an elementary teacher for many years has given her insight as to the kinds of literature young children enjoy. Tara is convinced that if children like a book's illustrations, they are more likely to enjoy reading it. "Yes, children love illustrations, but not the same kinds that adults often appreciate," she advises. "To create illustrations and subjects for kids, you must think like a kid." Tara is always looking for ideas to use in her writing. "I started working on this book several years ago when my own young daughter was afraid to sleep in her own bed. I put it on the back burner for several years while raising my children and working on my Masters in education. I am back to writing and illustrating now that my children are teenagers." She has found that being able to try out her work on her own class of first graders has also given her some great ideas and suggestions from the "real experts" in children's literature. "Children are all about fun --- if it isn't fun, they will not engage in the book or activity," she suggests. "Teachers often make the best writers and illustrators for children's books because of their unique insight. "We know what works." Tara also likes to design FREE teaching and parenting materials to share with others. You can download them at her website: www.purpleorchidpress.com.
