Charles is an average and dull man while Emma is a gorgeous and exciting girl. Emma, full of romantic fantasies, is excited to leave the farm she lives in. And so, she marries Charles soon after they met.
Their marriage failed to fulfill Emma's expectations and she becomes incredibly depressed. On top of her marriage, she´s also disappointed with motherhood as she wanted a son but gave birth to a daughter.
The couple moved to a bigger town for Emma and there she meets a bachelor named Leon. They realize they´re in love but they´re both too shy to do anything about it and eventually, Leon left said town.
However, Emma wasn't depressed for too long as she quickly met Rodolphe Boulanger, another handsome bachelor. Emma succumbs to the temptations of adultery this time and took out loans to buy gifts; she´s finally living the exciting life she wants ...until Rodolphe became bored and breaks up with Emma.
Emma was devastated, with a huge debt, and now ill.
Meanwhile, Charles is unsuspecting of the adultery and tries to deal with their financial trouble while also attending to Emma´s health.
One day, Charles took Emma to a theater, and there, they ran into Emma´s old flame, Leon.
