La tarea ha sido algo similar a lo que H.P.B. describe como su método de escribir Isis sin velo: Cuando pienso y observo mis pensamientos, me parecen como si fueran como esos pequeños trozos de madera de varias formas y colores en el juego conocido como rompecabezas: los recojo uno a uno, y trato de hacer que se ajusten el uno al otro, primero tomando uno, luego lo dejo a un lado hasta que encuentro su par correspondiente, y finalmente sale algo geométricamente correcto.

Helena Petrovna Blavatsky fue una ocultista, médium espiritual y escritora que cofundó la Sociedad Teosófica en 1875. Fue seguida internacionalmente como la principal teórica de la Teosofía, el movimiento esotérico que la Sociedad promovió.


Nacido en una familia aristocrática ruso-alemana, Blavatsky viajó extensamente por el Imperio Ruso cuando era niña. En gran parte autodidacta, desarrolló un interés en el esoterismo occidental durante su adolescencia. Según sus posteriores afirmaciones, en 1849 emprendió una serie de viajes por el mundo, visitando Europa, América y la India. Afirmó que durante ese período se encontró con un grupo de adeptos espirituales, los "Maestros de la Sabiduría Antigua", que la enviaron a Shigatse (Tíbet), donde la entrenaron para desarrollar sus propios poderes psíquicos. A principios de la década de 1870, Blavatsky se involucró en el movimiento espiritista, aunque defendía la existencia genuina de los fenómenos espiritistas, argumentaba en contra de la idea prevaleciente de los espiritistas de que las entidades contactadas eran los espíritus de los muertos. Se mudó a los Estados Unidos en 1873, se hizo amiga de Henry Steel Olcott y llamó la atención del público como médium espiritual.


En la ciudad de Nueva York, Blavatsky cofundó la Sociedad Teosófica con Olcott y William Quan Judge en septiembre de 1875. En 1877 publicó Isis sin velo, un libro que resume su visión teosófica del mundo. Asociándolo estrechamente con las doctrinas esotéricas del hermetismo y el neoplatonismo, Blavatsky describió la Teosofía como "la síntesis de la ciencia, la religión y la filosofía", proclamando que estaba reviviendo una "sabiduría antigua" que sustenta a todas las religiones del mundo. En 1880 ella y Olcott se trasladaron a la India, donde la Sociedad se alió con Arya Samaj de Dayananda Saraswati, un movimiento de reforma hindú. Ese mismo año, mientras estaban en Ceilán, ella y Olcott se convirtieron en los primeros occidentales en convertirse oficialmente al budismo. En medio de problemas de salud, en 1885 regresó a Europa, instalándose finalmente en Londres, donde estableció la Logia Blavatsky. Allí publicó La Doctrina Secreta, un comentario sobre lo que ella afirmaba que eran antiguos manuscritos tibetanos, así como otros dos libros, La Clave de la Teosofía y La Voz del Silencio. Murió de gripe en casa de su discípula y sucesora, Annie Besant.
