Tradicionalmente la preservación de las desigualdades entre hombres y mujeres han estado amparadas en la religión, el relato oral y el conocimiento científico; los cuales al ser emanados de dios, la historia y la ciencia, se harían incuestionables y en consecuencia inmodificables. Se instauró un discurso sexista en el que las mujeres fueron concebidas como inferiores, incapaces e irracionales, pese a ello, han ocupado un rol fundamental en los postulados del pensamiento sociofilosófico clásico y contemporáneo, ya sea por su discriminación o vindicación. Al respecto ¿Existe en las disertaciones de los filósofos de la sospecha Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche y Sigmund Freud una concepción de la mujer? ¿Cómo conciben a la mujer los sociólogos contemporáneos Erving Goffman, Pierre Bourdieu y Anthony Giddens? Son estos algunos de los elementos a dilucidar, en un esfuerzo por comprender las inequidades por razones de género, consideradas aún como periféricas en las ciencias sociales.
