About the Book

How is it that a well-known medieval physician was also the author of the most important technical text of his era? Why, taking a family tradition, this doctor spent many years of his life to create a complex astronomical clock-planetarium? How ever since the dawn of mechanical watchmaking were manufactured complex machines that reproduce the celestial motions? And why the powerful lords of the Middle Ages showed themselves so interested in them?Tracing the history of Giovanni Dondi in northern Italy in the fourteenth century from the University of Padua to the castle of Pavia, the construction of his famous Astrario, and the vicissitude of it up to the most recent reproductions based on the manuscripts that described the clock, this book offers the image of a particular period of history in which technology was about to become an important factor for the western development: a time when Europe's scientific and medical knowledge depended on the Hellenic tradition filtered through the Islamic civilization, and the courts of the lords saw in astrology a strategic tool for control of power.Second edition (2014) have some corrections, update of references and add a few comments gained from the reading and the discussion around the original text.
