Macbeth, duc de Glamis, cousin et fidèle chef des armées de Duncan, roi d'Écosse, s'illustre par son courage et sa persévérance, menant son armée à la victoire, dans une bataille qui oppose la Norvège à l'Écosse. Sur le chemin du retour, il rencontre trois sorcières qui l'accueillent en lui donnant trois titres différents: le duc de Glamis, le duc de Cawdor, et le futur roi. Puis, sans donner plus d'explications, elles disparaissent. Peu de temps après, deux seigneurs envoyés par Duncan viennent annoncer à Macbeth que le Roi le nomme duc de Cawdor en guise de récompense. La question se pose: les prédictions des sorcières éveillentelles en Macbeth le désir de se faire couronner, ou participentelles de la fatalité qui le pousse inexorablement vers son Destin? Toujours estil que Macbeth explique à son épouse cette rencontre, et que cette dernière le pousse illico à tuer Duncan en visite dans leur château. Macbeth devient Roi, après la fuite des enfants De Duncan. Débute alors un règne de peur, de terreur, de meurtres qui conduiront Macbeth à sa chute, à sa propre mort. Macbeth est une tragédie de William Shakespeare. Elle prend place dans l'Écosse médiévale et retrace de manière très romancée le règne de Macbeth (1040-1057), en s'inspirant de près du récit qu'en fait Raphael Holinshed dans ses Chroniques, parues en 1587. Dévoré d'ambition, le général Macbeth commet le crime de régicide pour s'emparer du pouvoir, poussé par son épouse Lady Macbeth, mais la culpabilité et la paranoïa les font peu à peu sombrer dans la folie. La date de rédaction de Macbeth est inconnue, mais elle pourrait se situer entre 1599 et 1606 si l'on tente de la lire à la lumière des événements contemporains, en particulier l'avènement du roi écossais Jacques VI sur le trône d'Angleterre en 1603 et la Conspiration des Poudres en 1605. Elle est publiée pour la première fois dans le Premier Folio en 1623. Macbeth est la plus courte des tragédies de Shakespeare et l'une de ses plus populaires
