Welchen immanenten, jedoch häufig geleugneten Wert Erotik und Pornografie gerade in der "Hauptstadt der Erotik" Wien haben, sei Zentrum der literarischen Untersuchung. Alles in allem gilt: je restriktiver das Verbot, desto größer die erogene Zone einer Gesellschaft. Zwischen Endzeit- und Aufbruchsstimmung, Weltschmerz und Euphorie, sowie Tradition und Traditionsbruch erweist sich das Fin de Siècle, die Jahrhundertwende oder, trefflicher und vor allem melancholischer ausgedrückt, das Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts als Epoche der Gegensätze. Gerade im österreichischen Raum und rund um die Bundeshauptstadt Wien fungiert das Fin de Siècle als apokalyptischer Paukenschlag. Ob bedrängt durch den Untergang der österreichischen Donaumonarchie, der wachsenden Industrialisierung oder der damit verbundenen sozialen und milieupolitischen Frage innerhalb der österreichischen Gesellschaft: Das Verständnis für die eigene Identität beginnt seine Klarheit zu verlieren. Unsicherheit wird zum steten Begleiter der Fortschrittseuphorie. Bewegen wir uns im deutschsprachigen Raum zwischen den Jahren 1890 und 1910, so entblößt die Epoche der Moderne eine Vielfalt an künstlerischen und literarischen Strömungen, Stilen und Begrifflichkeiten und damit auch verschiedene Herangehensweisen an die Kehrseite des rasanten wirtschaftlichen Fortschritts. Während in Deutschland der Naturalismus rein deskriptiv unter dem Mantel der Moderne hervorlugt und die Verwissenschaftlichung der Künste, sowie das Hässliche und Rohe ihre Bühne finden, steht der Mensch im Zentrum allen Tuns im Wien der Jahr
