Féministe, antimilitariste, socialiste, franc-maçonne, autrice et essayiste, Madeleine Pelletier (1874-1939) s'est battue sur tous les fronts pour défendre ses idées, avec une conviction et une force de caractère qui sont la marque des plus grands intellectuels engagés.

Née à Paris en 1874 de parents pauvres, au sein d'une famille très nombreuse, Madeleine Pelletier se retrouve presque immédiatement livrée à elle-même. En constant confl it avec sa mère dévote et royaliste, elle fréquente la bibliothèque de son quartier pour s'instruire par elle-même. À l'âge de douze ans, alors qu'elle a quitté l'école, elle fait la rencontre de groupes anarchistes puis féministes, auprès desquels elle va forger sa pensée, mais aussi découvrir le militantisme. En 1897, elle obtient son baccalauréat en autodidacte, poursuit ses études jusqu'à devenir, en 1906, la première femme médecin diplômée en psychiatrie. Elle se consacrera à cette discipline le restant de sa vie, avant d'être à son tour internée contre sa volonté.

En parallèle de sa carrière médicale, Madeleine Pelletier s'investit dans divers mouvements pour défendre les idées féministes, socialistes ou encore anarchistes. Elle intègre la franc maçonnerie en 1904 en rejoignant la seule loge autorisée aux femmes, souhaitant leur ouvrir davantage les portes de cette Société. Révulsée par le concept des rôles genrés, elle se met par provocation à porter le pantalon malgré l'interdiction alors en vigueur à l'encontre des femmes.

Elle est également une autrice prolifi que qui rédige non seulement des articles scientifi ques mais aussi un grand nombre d'essais en faveur de la cause féministe. Elle défend par exemple en 1909 l'accès aux urnes pour toutes dans La Question du vote des femmes. La maternité étant pour elle à l'origine de l'oppression et de l'asservissement des femmes, elle écrit aussi Le Droit à l'avortement en 1913.

Dans L'Émancipation sexuelle de la femme, Madeleine Pelletier plaide pour l'indépendance vis-à-vis des hommes, se scandalise de l'autorité patriarcale, du concept de virginité, de la condition des épouses délaissées, des inégalités conjugales, de l'objectifi cation et de la culpabilisation des femmes. Radicale, déterminée parfois jusqu'à en devenir intransigeante, Madeleine Pelletier soutient avec ferveur et conviction des positions qui sont encore au coeur des débats du XXIe siècle et qui suscitent toujours un dialogue parfois féroce entre conservateurs et progressistes.

Ce livre, réimprimé en fac-similé par Hachette-BnF, est identique à la publication originale de 1911 conservée à la Bibliothèque nationale de France.
