About the Book

English summary: The present volume offers four of the best speeches written by Lysias, the fifth-century BCE Athenian logographer. These four texts illustrate why Lysias is recognized as one of the ten Attic orators. The first speech was written in defense of a murder of passion. The second denounces the political abuses of Eratosthenes, one of the thirty tyrants that ruled over Athens after its defeat by Sparta. The third makes the case for a vociferous handicapped artisan threatened with losing his pension. The fourth argues for a group of orphans cheated of their inheritance. This collection allows for a better understanding of Athenian rhetoric and of the discursive practices at the heart of the citys social and political system.
