About the Book

In 1949, Lyndeborough, N.H. combined its last two one-room schools into a modern two-room Central School. That new school grew, expanding several times as the population increased. New programs such as a computer lab, were added in an effort to stay up-to-date and meet changing state standards. When the population declined after 2000, the sixth grade eventually moved to the cooperative middle school in neighboring Wilton. In 2015 a new cooperative school opened in Wilton for grades one through five and Central now houses kindergarten and pre-kindergarten as well as administrative offices.
This is the story of the Central School, its staff and students, the trials and tribulations from overcrowding to continually leaking roofs. Many of those early students have contributed their memories of the one room school and the early years at Central. They speak of multi-grade classrooms, forgotten games, and of long-gone favorite teachers.
Pictures have been found from the earliest days to the final fifth grade graduation. The story becomes a grand celebration of a village school, long the heart of the community, and those who attended it.

Jessie Salisbury has lived in Lyndeborough since she was a teenager and has been associated with the Central School from the beginning. Her brother was a student when it was built in 1949.
Her children and several grandchildren attended and she served for many years as School District Clerk. She was also clerk of the Wilton-Lyndeborough Cooperative School District for many years. In addition, as a reporter for several local papers, she has covered the doings of the School District for over forty years.
She is a member of the Historical Societies in both Lyndeborough and Wilton.

Nadine Preftakes moved to Lyndeborough with her family in 1984. She became involved with the school early on when the two oldest of her six children entered Lyndeborough Central School that year. In 1998 she began working at the school first as a Readiness instructor, later a Para educator, and in 2005 as the school secretary. She continues at the school, working part time in the morning Kindergarten program and part time as the school secretary in the afternoon.
