About the Book

The Scream of the Siren is a novel that tells the story of Cristina, a twelve-year-old suffering from polio who, together with her family, is forced to take refuge in the suburbs due to the Allied bombings in devastated Palermo in 1943. The story follows her growth until 1970, intertwining the events and violence of history with those of which Cristina is the victim. Her salvation is represented by her deep friendship with her cousin Franca and with the very rich Marquess Laura Betalli, a cultured and feminist ante litteram. Despite the difficulties, the three girls will realize their aspirations and Cristina will find human redemption thanks to her stubbornness and her passion for art. A story of hope and resilience.
