About the Author: Né à Paris en 1874 et mort à Nice en 1965, William S. Maugham fait partie de la haute bourgeoisie cosmopolite anglaise, sa mère était la fille d'un commandant de l'armée des Indes, le père conseiller juridique de l'ambassade d'Angleterre à Paris. Agent de l'Intelligence Service britannique, homosexuel, esthète, milliardaire grâce à sa plume, pendant plus de cinquante ans, il a été l'écrivain le mieux payé au monde et sa fortune avait été multipliée par les nouvelles techniques de la modernité. Cinéma, télévision, radios du monde entier lui versaient des royalties conséquentes. Des biens immobiliers, des actions et des valeurs bancaires ajoutaient des sommes considérables à sa fortune et sa collection remarquable d'oeuvres d'art était gérée avec intelligence. Grand voyageur, il parcourt la Malaisie, l'Indochine, l'Australie, les Antilles, la Polynésie, l'Amérique du Sud et la plupart des pays d'Europe. En décembre 1916, Maugham embarque avec son ami Gerald Haxton à bord du paquebot S.S. Sonoma à Honolulu en direction des îles Samoa. Maugham avait déjà une renommée littéraire grâce au roman Mrs Craddock de 1902 et surtout Of Human bondage (Servitude humaine) de 1915. Ses pièces théâtrales sont jouées avec succès dans les théâtres londoniens à partir de 1908. Pendant sa longue carrière d'écrivain, Maugham publie des comédies, des romans psychologiques, des récits d'espionnage et plus de cent nouvelles. Riccardo Pineri, professeur émérite des universités, a enseigné la littérature et la philosophie italiennes à l'université de Toulouse - Le Mirail et à l'université Paul-Valéry de Montpellier, la littérature comparée et l'esthétique à l'université de la Polynésie française. Depuis ses premières recherches consacrées aux rapports de la création poétique et du questionnement philosophique, il a mis au centre de ses travaux l'interrogation sur la rencontre des écrivains et des peintres occidentaux avec la Polynésie. Auteur de nombreux ouvrages et études sur les peintres en Polynésie, il a publié un premier recueil de nouvelles sur des chroniques de vie polynésiennes. Jean Guiart est anthropologue et océaniste. Il a été directeur d'études à l'École Pratique des Hautes Etudes (EPHE) et de 1973 à 1988 directeur du Laboratoire d'ethnologie du Musée de l'Homme. Ses intérêts de recherche sont les arts et les religions de l'Océanie. Il a fait une importante contribution à l'étude de la société canaque.
