About the Book

Zu den ersten Komponistenpersonlichkeiten, die sich ausserhalb der Schonberg-Schule der Zwolftonmethode verschrieben, zahlte Luigi Dallapiccola. 1904 in Pisino/Pazin (Istrien) geboren, hielt er sich 1917/18 durch die Kriegsereignisse bedingt in Graz auf, lebte dann in Triest und studierte schliesslich in Florenz Klavier und Komposition. Die Begegnungen mit Schonbergs Harmonielehre und den Melodramen Pierrot lunaire liessen ihn endgultig den Komponistenberuf ergreifen, und bereits in den 1930er Jahren wandte er sich der Dodekaphonie zu, nachdem er bei den IGNM-Festen Werke der Wiener Schule kennengelernt hatte. Wegen ihrer radikalen Atonalitat wurden seine Kompositionen aber sowohl im nationalsozialistischen Deutschland als auch im fa- schistischen Italien abgelehnt, sodass Dallapiccola, der 1942 in Wien mit Anton Webern zusammentraf und ihm spater seine Sex carmina Alcaei widmete, erst nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg zu breiter Anerkennung gelangte. Vor allem seine Oper Il Prigioniero sowie die Canti di liberazione verschafften ihm den endgultigen Durchbruch zu internationalem Ruhm, der 1968 (Berlin) mit der Oper Ulisse (die in vielen Details ihr Vorbild in Schonbergs Moses und Aron besitzt) ihren Hohepunkt fand. Dallapiccola starb 1975 in Florenz. - Der Band, der die mannigfaltigen Beziehungen Dallapiccolas zu Wien (und hier auch zu seinem Wiener Verlag, der Universal-Edition) sowie zur "Wiener Schule" insgesamt beleuchtet, versammelt die Referate des am 18. und 19. Oktober 2004 anlasslich seines "100. Geburtstages" gemeinsam vom Wissenschaftszentrum Arnold Schonberg und dem Wiener Arnold Schonberg Center veranstalteten Symposions. Das "Wissenschaftszentrum Arnold Schonberg" der Universitat fur Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien, das 1996 als "Arnold-Schonberg-Institut" gegrundet wurde und seit 2002 eine Abteilung des "Institutes fur Musikalische Stilforschung" bildet, besitzt - in Erganzung der Aktivitaten des Wiener Arnold Schonberg Centers - die Aufgabe, Lucken in der Erforschung von Leben und Wirken des grossen osterreichischen Komponisten sowie insgesamt der "Wiener Schule" zu schliessen. Dabei sollen neben Schonbergs eigenen kompositorischen, padagogischen und organisatorischen Aktivitaten insbesondere die Arbeit seiner Schuler und Freunde, die Rezeption seiner Lehre durch Musiker aller Richtungen und Stile, die Leitlinien der Komponisten und Interpreten der "Wiener Schule" fur Interpretation und Auffuhrungspraxis sowie schliesslich das Schicksal der 1933 bzw. 1938 Entrechteten, Vertriebenen und Ermordeten in den Blick genommen werden, wobei hier auch die "Zweite Generation" der Wiener Schule Gegenstand der Betrachtung wird. - Die Schriften des Wissenschaftszentrums Arnold Schonberg fassen Ergebnisse der Forschungen, Symposien und Workshops zusammen, um sie sowohl im Bewusstsein der Offentlichkeit zu verankern als auch fur weiterfuhrende Recherchen nutzbar zu machen.
