Als von den Feudalherrschern niemand mehr gegen die Militärmaschinerie des Königs von Frankreich ankommt, greift Ludwig nach Weltherrschaft - und scheitert. Sein unehelicher ältester Sohn, Ludwigs Ein und Alles, durchschwimmt von den deutschen Landen aus mit dem gegnerischen Heer den Rhein. Wer hat ihn motiviert? In Ludwigs Leben surrt das Rädchen der Zeit zurück. Was er in Kriegen annektiert hat, muss der alte Mann an die Erben seiner Feinde zurückgeben (auch im Geschichtsbuch).
