El taller - La vida de Roberto Hasting - Alex Monzon Roberto se habia levantado de la cama, y vestido con su traje de calle y sentado a una mesa llena de papeles, escribia. El cuarto era una guardilla trastera, baja de techo, con una gran ventana a un patio. El centro del cuarto lo ocupaban dos estatuas de barro, de un armazon interior de alambre, dos figuras de mas del tamano natural, descomunales y estramboticas. Estaban ambas solamente esbozadas, como si el autor no hubiera sabido acabarlas; eran dos jigantes rendidos por el cansancio, los dos de cabeza pequena y rapada, pecho hundido, vientre abultado y largos brazos simiescos. Los dos parecian agobiados por un abatimiento profundo. Frente a la ventana ancha habia un sofa, tapizado con una percalina floreada; en las sillas y en el suelo se levantaban estatuas medio envueltas en trapos humedos; en un angulo aparecia una caja, llena de pedazos secos de escayola, y en un rincon un lebrillo con barro. De cuando en cuando Roberto miraba a un reloj de bolsillo colocado sobre la mesa, entre los papeles; se levantaba y daba unos paseos por el cuarto. Por la ventana, en las galerias de las casas de enfrente se veian pasar mujeres desharrapadas y sucias; de la calle subia una baraunda ensordecedora de gritos de las verduleras y de los vendedores ambulantes. A Roberto, sin duda, no le molestaba aquella continua algarabia, y al cabo de poco rato se sentaba y seguia escribiendo. Mientras tanto, Manuel subia y bajaba las casas de toda la calle en busca de Roberto Hasting. Hallabase Manuel con decision para intentar seriamente un cambio de vida, se sentia capaz de tomar una determinacion energica y dispuesto a seguirla hasta el fin. Su hermana mayor, que acababa de casarse con un bombero, le regalo unos pantalones rotos de su esposo, una chaqueta vieja y una bufanda raida. Ademas, anadio a la donacion una gorra de forma y de color absurdos, un sombrero hongo anciano y algunos buenos y vagos consejos acerca del trabajo, el cual, como nadie ignora, es el padre de todas las virtudes, como el caballo es el mas noble de todos los animales y la ociosidad la madre de todos los vicios. Es muy posible, casi seguro, que Manuel hubiese preferido a estos buenos y vagos consejos, a esta gorra de forma y color absurdos, a la chaqueta vieja, al sombrero anciano, a la bufanda raida y a los pantalones rotos, una pequena cantidad de dinero, ya fuera en cuartos, en plata o en billetes. La juventud es asi, no tiene norte ni guia; imprevisora siempre, concede mas valor a los dones materiales que a los espirituales, sin comprender en su ignorancia absoluta que una moneda se gasta, un billete se cambia, y las dos cosas pueden perderse, y en cambio un buen consejo ni se gasta ni se pierde, ni se reduce a calderilla, y tiene ademas la ventaja de que sin cuidarse de el para nada, dura eternamente, sin enmohecimiento ni deterioro. Prefiriese una cosa u otra, hay que confesar que Manuel tuvo que contentarse con lo que le dieron.
