¿Cuál es el origen profundo de esta frase que muchos chilenos repiten, como por acto reflejo, cuando escuchan el nombre de Talca?

Por años se ha oído la historia de una boutique de la calle Uno Sur que en el siglo XIX ofrecía productos traídos de París y Londres, y cuyo eslogan era precisamente "Talca, París y Londres".

También ha sonado la hipótesis de que un inglés (no se sabe quién ni cuándo) habría dicho que "Talca parece Londres", y que esa opinión habría originado la famosa frase.

Por otra parte se atribuye a Talca un grandioso pasado económico y social que sumado a la presencia de ingleses y franceses, explicaría su elevación a la altura de París y Londres...

Pero lo cierto es que cualquiera que visite esas ciudades, incluso por Google Earth, se dará cuenta de que no tienen ningún parecido con Talca, al menos en lo material. Y es aquí donde comienza a revelarse la novedad de este libro.

Los hechos materiales explican el origen evidente pero no las razones profundas por las que dicha frase surgió y se sostuvo en el tiempo. Es por ello que el autor incursiona bajo la superficie; nada menos que en la mente de esa clase "orgullosa y altiva", como la llamó Opazo Maturana, a la que iba dirigido el lema.

Osvaldo Valenzuela procura responder preguntas sobre motivaciones no confesadas: ¿Por qué la aristocracia talquina se afanaba en vestir a la moda de París y Londres? ¿Por qué sus miembros se paseaban luego por una vereda de la plaza como si interpretaran un papel teatral?

Estas interrogantes el autor las asocia con las denominadas "exigencias originales del corazón humano". Es decir, mediante esas conductas los elegantes talquinos habrían procurado satisfacer exigencias de carácter espiritual o, como diría el poeta Rainer María Rilke, buscaban respuestas externas para problemas internos.

El libro postula, asimismo, que el comportamiento de esos aristócratas tendría que ver con el de los ciudadanos del siglo XXI.

Y este es uno de los mayores atractivos de "Luces y sombras..." demostrar al lector que, pese al paso de los años y de los cambios culturales, ambos grupos de seres comparten motivaciones comunes que impulsan sus afanes cotidianos.

Esta hipótesis y otros elementos del libro, como la brillante y casi desconocida trayectoria en España del conde de Maule (quien compró el título de "ciudad" a Talca y le construyó su primer hospital); los románticos detalles del idilio entre Carmen Arriagada y el pintor bávaro Mauricio Rugendas (autor del "Huaso y la lavandera"); o la legendaria historia del fundador de la peluquería Mascaró, quien protagonizó una novela escrita, nada menos, que por el autor de "Sangre y arena", son razones significativas para hacer de "Luces y sombras de un mito. Talca, París y Londres (1743-1928)" un libro que los talquinos (y también los no talquinos) no pueden dejar de conocer.
